A Cinematic Couple Photoshoot on a Lake

We were genuinely excited about this cinematic couple photoshoot from the moment the idea came up. Together with the couple, we planned a pre-wedding session in nature, on a lake, with a dreamy, vintage feeling, to make it look like a getaway from the regular life in this beautiful place with adventurous atmosphere.

The lake was in Vienna, close to the city. Comet Photo is now based in Berlin, though, and we travel for weddings and to capture love stories throughout Germany and Europe. So while this exact lake is not in Berlin, the idea is something we would happily recreate (maybe with a slightly different style) in Berlin, around Treptower park where we can rent even more stylish boats, or anywhere else a couple takes us.

Planning a cinematic couple photoshoot on the water

We rented two boats. The couple had the pretty white rowboat, while we took a much less photogenic plastic pedal boat. The pedal boats are amazing when you’re photographing on the water, it made our lives much easier: we could pedal around them quickly, find the good angles and move again whenever the wind carried either boat away.

The whole session took around three hours. They are a gorgeous couple and, honestly, it was not difficult to find beautiful frames with them. Their wedding is coming quite soon, and we are already looking forward to photographing the next part of their story.

What made the shoot challenging was the wind. Rowing on a lake is one thing; photographing from one exact angle is another. For some of the backlit pictures, We wanted the sun to fall slightly from behind while still catching their faces. That meant the couple, the sun and my camera all had to be at just the right degree. Usually we had only a few seconds before one of the boats drifted and we had to row into position again.

And here comes the thing that we are on this pedal boat and can actually keep our hands free and pedal just half a meter forward and get the right frame but if the couples boat was moving away too much they had to take out paddles and row to the right spot again.

We’d say the challenge made the photoshoot only more fun and enjoyable!

A city lake made to feel far away

The lake sat right beside the city, and you could see buildings and skyscrapers across the water. I wanted to keep a couple of frames that showed that context, but most of the story needed to feel more detached. As if we were on a quiet lake far away from everything Ideally the feel would have been as if we are many kilometers away from civilisation. We rowed farther toward the bushes and the tree-lined shore, choosing angles where nature filled the frame.

As the light changed, we also made more experimental pictures: softer focus, reflections, and overhead compositions. This is the part I love about cinematic wedding photography—one location can slowly turn into several different scenes instead of giving us forty versions of the same photograph.

I also brought a studio light onto the boat. Holding the camera, an expensive lens and the light while water was everywhere around us was slightly frightening. Changing lenses in a small boat that never completely stops moving was worse. Still, it was worth doing, because that extra light let the final part of the gallery become darker and more dramatic without losing the couple inside the scene.

It’s nice to understand that even in challenging locations we can capture these wonderful photos and nothing will stop us from capturing the beauty of it all.

From soft evening light to the final dramatic frame

By the time it grew darker, we rushed to the one place where I could leave the boat and climb onto a bridge. From above, I photographed them sitting and lying together inside the rowboat. The wind made this part even harder: every time they stopped rowing, the boat slipped under the bridge and out of sight, so they had to move back into the frame again.

We finished with a flash placed above them, creating a narrow fall of light onto the boat while everything around it became deep and quiet. The wider photograph near the end of this gallery with the small boat beneath the dark trees and the light from above is one of the last shots that we have done when the sunlight was already gone but the street lights have not yet taken over.

Our main concept of the shoot was to get some progression from something soft, dreamy and romantic, then towards emotional and dramatic after the sunset light was gone and we started using lights more actively.
