Alternative Wedding Photography in Austria: A Love Story Told Like a Film
At the end of April, we did this alretnative wedding photography style-shoot at Fernblick, a really special venue in Niederösterreich. The idea was to tell a love story that starts out looking quite traditional but slowly shifts into something more personal and emotional what we call alternative wedding photography. We photographed Karo & Julia separately at first — one in a quiet hotel room upstairs, the other downstairs in a room with a juke box and that kind of nostalgic, soft light we really love. They both prepared for the day in their rooms and went to a meeting point.
As in the films of David Lynch who’s work inspires us a lot, and where the red curtains bring an atmosphere of mystery, we’ve chosen red curtains to be this transitional moment where they meet. After they went to the main hall and celebrated at a table and started running away. Then the story unfolded: they changed into black, left the hotel behind, and ran down to a hill edge at sunset where the ceremony took place. It was a beautiful evening with a soft glowing sunset and cold blue shadow in the valley.
Almost the whole photoshoot we did with natural light, to keep it authentic, except from the moment with the red curtains where we have slightly broken the 4th wall and made it look as dramatic as possible. Light was absolutely perfect for there dreamy fine art photos at sunset, and we are glad that we stayed there all the way until 9pm. In the end the shoot took us the whole day and it was absolutely worth it.
It was a perfect wedding setting with both beautiful indoor location and a scenic view from a hilltop garden outside. And we have a special love for viewpoints as the one featured at the end of this gallery we would happily share with you another gallery photographed with a dramatic overcast sky and sunset on Kahlenberg, on the outskirts of Vienna.
If you’re looking for cinematic wedding photography, or if you’re into alternative wedding inspiration and want to see what a storytelling wedding photographer can do — this photoshoot might speak to you.
Preparation
We organised the photoshoot together with Jacqueline Koch, a great wedding planner who was also looking for someone open to doing alternative wedding photography—something less traditional, more personal, and with character. She connected all the vendors, helped find the location, and made sure everything flowed smoothly.
We worked closely on the overall aesthetics and mood, making sure it all fit the kind of story we wanted to tell. Then we developed a simple plot for the shoot and made a list of the photos we really wanted to capture, cinematic, lively and emotional. It was the kind of creative collaboration that makes alternative wedding photography feel exciting and special.
Aside from that there were, of course, more people who contributed for this photoshoot to happen.
Fini’s Auftragskonditorei prepared a beautiful wedding cake for us.
Bernhard Lakonig prepared the table decorations and the elegant and minimalist wedding flower bouquet.
The make-up and styling was done by beautymoments.withmel
And Of course our beautiful models are Julia and Karo
